“I did achieve personal bests after my Pilates, which I haven’t had in like three years.”
Does Pilates make you stronger in the gym?
I did achieve personal bests after my Pilates, which I haven’t had in like three years. And I think it’s a combination of definitely the work in the gym, but also being able to move differently now than I used to. And I can train much harder and much more consistently without pain or injury. And because I can do that, then I can progress much more than I used to.
Is Pilates only about avoiding injury?
It wasn’t to just avoid my ability to get injured or be in pain, it was an ability to actually achieve my powerlifting goals. So that ability to combine the two, I’ve never seen before. I think that that’s amazing.
Can you do Pilates if you have scoliosis?
The second thing is because I have scoliosis, so my spine isn’t straight, and I think that’s partly why it’s much harder for me to hold weight and keep myself stable. And I thought going to Pilates would help me just manage my spine a lot better, keep it healthy, keep it strong, which will then help me later on when I kinda lift in the gym.
How is a private session different from a Pilates class?
I think this is special because it’s so, so customized to me. She started with asking what’s my fitness goals or athletic goals. It wasn’t about Pilates at all, it was about me and what was holding me back from achieving what I wanted to achieve. And then she designed a program to be specifically about what I’m trying to achieve while considering my constraints.
The best example I’ll give, just a few weeks ago, she went to my gym to watch me lift, just so she understands what it is I’m trying to do and where I’m getting stuck. So that for me is true dedication and true caring, and someone I can trust that is really partnering with me to help me achieve my goals.

0:00When I was doing my powerlifting training, which as you can imagine is very intense, I would get uh a lot of pain because of the load and the intensity of the training. I kinda wanted my core to be more stronger to hold the weight up.
